WIND TURBINE BASICS
The Turbine :
Usually a generator that produces 3 phase, AC, wild electricity, meaning there are three
electric fields producing an alternating current of variable voltage. The faster the wind
blows the more current it produces. It is basically in an unusable state for homes, etc.

The Controller:
Controls the functions of the turbine such as the direction of the turbine in to or out of
the wind, monitors wind speed, and usually the braking system. Normally the controller
changes the AC electricity into DC voltage. At this point you have DC current that is
somewhat controlled.

The Inverter:
Takes DC current and cycles it into AC current. There are many different kinds, sine
wave, square wave, modified, grid tie, charger-inverter, etc. Grid tie inverters hook into
the utility grid and supply power back to the utility company. Basically the grid works as
a battery system for the power the turbine produces. It sends electricity into the grid
when you don't need it and you get power from the grid when the furnace, tv,
refrigerator, etc, turns on.

The Grid:
The power lines that supply cities, neighborhoods, and your home. There are many utility
companies that use it to provide electricity to you. Most provide ways you can hook into it
and offset or eliminate your energy costs. Some limit the amount of customers that can
hook in to a percentage of it's overall customer base. Some use parallel metering where
you have 2 meters. One to track the energy you are sending back into the grid and the
other to track your usage. Some have net metering which just means your meter can
spin clockwise or counter clockwise to track your usage and production. Most will pay a
wholesale rate for your excess production.
Anyone wanting to use solar or wind to produce electricity for the grid should contact
their provider to get specific details from that company. Most times you can hook in
directly from your household service panel.

This is just a general description. There are many variances depending on the system you
choose, your energy provider, etc. Do your home work before you spend hard earned
money and time on your system.
